Alla Prima Bootcamp 4 Weeks to Confident Painting
MATERIALS:
Painting Surfaces
- 2- 8”x 10” panels
- 3- 9”x 12” panels
- 1- 11”x 14” panels
(*note- panels can be canvased or gessoed “hardboard”)
Paints
- Brown Umber
- French Ultramarine Blue
- Red *
- Cadmium Lemon Yellow or Hansa Yellow
- Naples Yellow Pale
- Viridian or Phthalo Green
- Ivory Black
- Titanium White
* 37ml tube paints should be enough for this four week course. Avoid “Hues” as these are cheaper paints with less actual pigment and typically more linseed oil or fillers
* I prefer when using one red, Winsor & Newton Bright Red, and the reason for that is I want a red that is a true red. I don’t need a Cadmium Medium Red that leans warm, because a little yellow would make Bright Red warm. I don’t need a cool purplish red like a crimson, because a bit of blue to Bright Red will cool it.
Brushes
- Flats- #3, #6, #8
- Filberts- #2, #3
- Rounds- #1, #2
*Note- Many brushes are available for oils, some are pure hog bristle, some are synthetic blends of hog bristle and acrylic hairs. The better more expensive hog bristles have small near imperceptible hooks at the end of the hairs that interlock and hold their shape well, lasting for a good number of paintings. The synthetics offer a cheaper alternative providing the nice way hogs apply paint, but the synthetic resiliency and spring back to shape. I recommend having more than one brush of each size on hand.
You will develop your own feel and signature style over time, preferences for brushes. For this course, I give you a recommendation what I have found works well with workshop students.
Additional Supplies
- Gamblin’s Solvent Free Gel Medium
- Gamblin’s Odorless Mineral Spirits or equivalent
- Brush Cleaner *Note- There are some fine commercial brush cleaners at art stores, but I myself use a bit of medium to wipe while painting, when done I clean first with a bit of mineral spirits, then Simple Green- nontoxic and biodegradable, and finally a gentle to the skin liquid dish soap and water; I will talk about my cleaning during the course.
- Paint knifes
- 1-1/4” diamond
- 3” blade
- Rags & Paper Towels *Note- one trick I use in studio, is I make use of those old phone books, wiping brushes and paint knife filling a page, tear off and throw away
