Last night I caught the tail end of the “David/Death of Marat” episode of Simon Schama’s Power of Art, the eight-part series that first aired here in the States on PBS in 2007, and I was reminded what a fantastic series this is. Local listings say the rest of the series will air this month, the J.M.W. Turner episode the next among them.

The Turner piece explicates “the greatest British painting of the 19th century,” Slave Ship (Slavers Throwing Overboard the Dead and Dying, Typhoon Coming On) with a look into the artist’s world in 1840, and it is not to be missed. Read more about the Turner episode by clicking here.

And in case you missed it, the June issue of Watercolor Artist offers a peek inside the mind of this master (pictured above)—from precise pencil drawings to the expressive watercolor washes of Turner’s sketchbooks that depicted his environment. Find the feature on Turner’s sketchbooks in the June issue of Watercolor Artist, or download the June issue in an instant by clicking here.
