Description
French Impressionist Edgar Degas has been an inspiration to pastel artists for generations. Join artist Desmond O’Hagan as he embarks on a journey to better understand the pastel paintings of Degas through the time-honored tradition of creating a master copy of a beautiful Degas pastel. The journey begins in this video as Desmond creates two works of art, one in charcoal and another with charcoal and pastel, looking closely at Degas’ style and expressive markmaking. These two exercises are essential in Desmond’s preparation for the full pastel copy, demonstrated in part 2 of this series:Â Decoding Degas: Pastel Master Copy.
In this video, you’ll:
- Create a charcoal drawing in the style of Degas
- Explore expressive mark making
- Experiment with pastel as an accent to a charcoal drawing
